Cayuga Nation’s federal representative, Clint Halftown, announced that the casino was open Friday. It is located at the intersection of Route 89 and Garden Street Extension in the upstate New York area. The Cayuga Nation Council, led by Halftown, seized the building in 2020 after Cayuga Nation police carried out raids and demolished the building, which operates as part of its disapproval of Halftown. Federally recognized Cayuga tribe sued the village, claiming that Indian game regulation laws preempt the application of village ordinances.
The case was first dismissed in 2015, but the ruling was unanimously overturned in the second circuit in 2016. Judge Gerard Lynch rejected the town’s view that the tribe’s federal representative lacked the right to sue and that injuries were not sufficiently claimed by the Cayuga tribe.
A three-member jury says Clint Halftown, who filed a lawsuit on behalf of the tribe, has been recognized by the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) as the last legitimate leader of the tribe.
