Hyundai E&C rides 7-game winning streak to first ‘solo lead’ of season

Hyundai E&C defeats Pepper Savings Bank to take sole lead for the first time this season.

Hyundai E&C earned a 3-0 (25-17, 25-23, 28-26) set victory over Pepper Savings Bank in the third round of the 2023-2024 Dodram V-League Women’s Division at Suwon Indoor Stadium on Wednesday.

With the win, Hyundai E&C extended its winning streak to seven games and improved its overall record to 11-4 and 35 points on the season, leapfrogging Heungkuk Life (12-2 and 33 points) for sole possession of first place. Meanwhile, Pepper Savings Bank, which lost its eighth straight game, remained in last place with a 2-13 record and six points.

Hyundai E&C dominated Pepper Savings Bank with its height, grabbing 14 blocks. Moma led the way with 20 points, Yang Hyo-jin had 13 points with four blocks, Wipawi had 10 points with three blocks, and Lee Da-hyun added eight points with four blocks. Pepper Savings Bank was led by Yasmin with 26 points and Lee Han-bi with 10 points, but it was not enough to prevent the team from losing.

Hyundai E&C took the lead at 7-7 in the first set on a service ace by Jeong Ji-yoon, then went ahead on an open attack by Wipawi and a kill by Lee Da-hyun. In the second set, Pepper Savings Bank fought back hard, but Hyundai E&C managed to take the set. Unlike the first set, the second set was a tense seesaw game, with both teams exchanging points until the score reached 17-17. Hyundai took the lead with a block and attack by Wipawi after a kill by Park, but Pepper Savings Bank responded with a kill by Phillips and a back-attack by Yasmin, and tied the score at 21-21 with a block by Park.

After HMC took the lead again with a timeout from Moma, Pepper Savings Bank countered with a quick open from Yasmin, and after Moma’s open attack and a block from Jeong Ji-yoon created set point, HMC sealed the set with a quick open from Jeong Ji-yoon.

With the two points, Samsung Fire improved to 10 wins (5 L) on the season and jumped into second place with 25 points, ahead of Korean Air (8 L, 6 W, 25 P) and KEPCO (8 L, 6 W, 24 P). Woori Card, who were content with a point, moved to 31 points with an 11-4 record.

Samsung Fire achieved a triple-crown as Yosubani scored 39 points, including four blocks and four service points. Kim Jung-ho and Shin Shin-ho added 23 and 15 points, respectively. Woori Card was led by Matei’s 33 points, Kim Ji-han’s 19 points and Lee Sang-hyun’s 11 points, but it was not enough for the team.

After taking the first and second sets and dropping the third and fourth, Samsung Fire played a tense seesaw game with Woori Card in the fifth set, but with the score tied at 13-13, Yosubani’s back-attack and Kim Jun-woo’s block on Matei’s back-attack ended the game and gave them a hard-fought victory.
