“For the first time since 2012, 3,000 steals have been recorded in a single season of the big league.”

Philadelphia Phillies Bryson Stott hit a right-handed hit in the fourth inning against the Miami Marlins on the 9th (Korea Standard Time) and stole second base. It was his 3,000th stolen base from MLB this season.

The media predicted that a total of 3,457 steals could be made in MLB this year, considering that the regular season is about a month away.

Since the 1920 Live Bowl era, the most stolen bases in a season have been 3,585 stolen bases recorded in 1987. The second place in history was 3421 stolen bases in 1999.

This year is expected to surpass the 1999 record. 안전놀이터

There are also four “Daedo” who have already exceeded 40 steals this season.

Ronald Acuña Jr. (Atlanta Braves), who leads the MLB’s overall stolen base this season, has 63 steals, followed by Esteuri Lewis (Oakland Athletics) with 58 steals.

Corbin Carroll (Arizona Diamondbacks) and CJ Abrams (Washington Nationals) recorded 45 and 41 steals, respectively.

More players who exceed 40 steals for the rest of the season can come out. Bobby Witt Jr. (Kansas City Royals) is on the verge of 40 steals with 39 steals.

Korean major leaguer Kim Ha-sung (San Diego), who ranks eighth in the MLB overall stolen bases after Nico Horner (Chicago Cubs) and Julio Rodriguez (Seattle Mariners), who each stole 36 bases, also has 34 stolen bases. Kim Ha-sung, who recorded 12 steals last year, was also ranked second as a player with the largest increase in stolen bases between 2022 and 2023.

The increase in stolen bases by each club is also noticeable.

Of the 30 clubs, 23 have already surpassed the stolen bases recorded last season.

Among them, the team with the most stolen bases is the Cincinnati Reds, which recorded 58 stolen bases throughout last season. Cincinnati harvested 165 steals this year, up 107 steals in a year.

The significant increase in stolen bases is largely due to the changed regulations.

MLB has expanded the size of the square base from 15 inches (38.1 centimeters) to 18 inches (45.72 centimeters) this season. As a result, the distance between first and third base and second base was reduced by about 4.5 inches (11.43cm), and the distance between first and third base and home plate was reduced by about 3 inches (7.62cm).

Limiting the pitcher’s check of the runner or taking his foot off the pitching board to up to two times per at-bat also facilitated the runner’s attempt to steal.

Meanwhile, Noah Syndergaard, who was recently released from the Cleveland Guardians, allowed the most stolen bases this season.

Syndergaard pitched 88⅔ innings in 18 games this year, giving up 34 stolen bases and catching only one stolen base.
