This season’s NBA playoffs have been an upset of sorts. With playoff regulars the Golden State Warriors, Los Angeles Lakers, Denver Nuggets, Miami Heat, and Milwaukee Bucks all out of the picture, a fresh set of brackets has been drawn.
CBS Sports predicted the winners of the East and West Finals. In the East, it was Boston, as expected, while in the West, Minnesota and Dallas will battle it out.
It was based on a survey of five experts.
Brad Botkins picked Boston to defeat Indiana in four games.
Boston will be without Kristaps Porzingis for Game 1 and possibly Game 2 due to injury. He is Boston’s leading rim protector as well as their offense inside and out. There is a void on offense. However, the Celtics still boast a super one-two punch in Jayson Tatum-Jaylen Brown and strong perimeter defense in Derrick White. The Celtics are the top seed in the East.
The Indiana Pacers, on the other hand, are anchored by Tyreese Halliburton, who has established himself as one of the best point guards in the league. They also have a very good combination of All-Star forwards Pascal Siakam and Myles Turner, who they acquired midseason from the Toronto Raptors. However, they are rated as weaker than Boston on offense.
The other four experts favor Boston with 4-1, 4-2, and 4-1 respectively.
The West was interesting. Four experts picked Minnesota to win, while one picked Dallas to advance to the championship game.
Jasmine Wimbish was the only one to predict a Dallas win, saying, “Dallas will struggle under the basket. However, they have a much more solid core in Luka Doncic and Kyrie Irving. I think Dallas will win a hard-fought Game 7.
While all four experts predicted a Game 7, James Herbert was the only one to pick Minnesota to win the series 4-1: “Dallas didn’t have a great offensive performance against Oklahoma City in the Western Conference Finals. Minnesota didn’t have a great offense against Denver in the quarterfinals either. It’s going to come down to the difference in role players. Minnesota is stronger.
Minnesota’s defense, along with strong performances from Nazr Reed, Zach McDaniels, and Mike Conley, helped them win.
